The claim that wouldn’t die

For thirty years, one idea has floated around classrooms, parenting forums, and product boxes: play Mozart and get smarter. It sold CDs for babies and shaped study advice for a generation. There’s just one problem — it was never really true, at least not the way people came to believe.

Why it fell apart

When other scientists tried to reproduce the effect, it kept shrinking or vanishing. What remained was better explained by simple arousal and mood — any music (or even a good story) you enjoy can lift your alertness briefly, which nudges performance on certain tasks.
